Cynotilapia aurifrons "Lushununu"

Cynotilapia aurifrons (formerly known as Cynotilapia sp."mbamba") can be found in a rocky environment but also in intermediate zones from rocks to sand along the northwestern coast between Mundola and Ngara and in Tanzania between Lundu and Lupingu. Itīs not clear if the name of the finding location of this variant is a place or a reef or something else, probably this location is situated somewhere between Chitande Island and Chewere.
In trade this variant is offered as Cynotilapia zebroides (afra) "Lushununu" however due to the lack of the characteristic continuous stripes on the head of this variant of Cynotilapia zebroides, which are typical for this species, we think this one is not a variant of Cynotilapia zebroides but a variant of Cynotilapia aurifrons.

In the lake the males of these species can grow to 10 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 14 cm, females grow to about 10 cm.

Cynotilapia aurifrons "Lushununu" can behave intolerant against equal species but also to other inhabitants. You can best keep this species with multiple females and a lot of hiding places in the aquarium.

In the lake, they feed primarily on plankton but also with algae that grow on the rocks. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
